Public Camping
Most park campsites are only accessible by watercraft. Located just outside the park, there are public and private campgrounds available. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers two nearby facilities in the Kabetogama and Ash River areas: Woodenfrog State Forest Campground and Ash River State Forest Campground, respectively. In the Rainy Lake area, the City of International Falls offers a small campground: City Beach Campground, and in the Crane Lake area, the Superior National Forest offers Echo Lake Campground and dispersed camping
Woodenfrog State Forest Campground is located in Kabetogama State Forest on the shores of Kabetogama Lake. The fee for an individual site is $14, and all sites are on a first-come, first-serve basis, meaning there are no reservations. The campground is considered "primitive" and is designed to furnish the basic needs of campers. The eight campsites, two of which are handicap accessible, consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. In addition, vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water are available. Altogether, there are 59 dive-in sites or parking spaces, seven toilets, two of which are handicap accessible, two wells (for drinking water), and two docks. The campground also offers lake access, swimming, fishing, and has one picnic shelter.
Ash River State Forest Campground is located outside of Orr, Minnesota, near the Ash River. The fee for an individual site is $14, and all sites are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Ash River campground is adjacent to the Ash River public landing, which has a boat ramp, and has carry-in access, meaning visitors can access the campground via canoe or kayak. Activities at the campground include fishing, hiking, swimming, river access, whitewater paddling on the Ash river, and access to Voyageurs National Park. The campground consists of eight "primitive" campsites that are similar to those at Kabetogama Campground. One of these sites is handicap accessible. There are two toilets, both of which are handicap accessible, one well, and two picnic tables.
City Beach Campground is located three miles east of International falls on County Road 20. City Beach has two large parking areas, a 24 foot by 50 foot covered picnic pavilion, 650 feet of sand beach on Rainy lake, eight outdoor cooking grills, dressing and bathroom facilities, a floating swim platform, regulation basketball and sand volleyball courts, and a swing set and play area.
Surrounded by a mix of aspen, balsam fir, spruce, and pine trees, Echo Lake Campground is on the south shore of Echo Lake, a popular destination for walleye and panfish fishing, and is on the Echo Trail, 22 miles northeast of Orr, Minnesota. Echo Lake is located on the west end of the Echo Trail, a remote country road that traverses through the heart of the western Superior National Forest. The fee for a single site is $10, and the fee for a group site is $20. Altogether, there are 25 campsites, 24 of which are single sites, and one of which is a group site. Amenities include a solar-powered well and a vault-styled restroom (a privy). This campground also has a swimming area, playground, picnic area, boat launches, and a one-and-a-half mile hiking trail.
Dispersed camping is in the general forest area of the Superior National Forest. Visitors may set up camp anywhere as long as they are not within certain distances from developed areas. This means they may not set up a dispersed campsite within a developed campground or adjacent to it, on a road, or on a trail.
